A question recently posed in an issue of O, The Oprah Magazine, "If you could invent one thing what would it be and why?
After having spoken with a number of women, the answer came easily to mind. Apparently the O team agrees since they published my response in its entirety.
"I would invent a Self-Esteemator and gift it to every woman who needed it, which I suspect is most of us. In my daily conversations I talk with women who for any number of reasons accept so much less than we deserve, undervaluing our worth and selling ourselves short in innumerable ways. It pains me to hear some of the stories that many tell themselves and have come to accept as their written-in-stone narrative. My Self-Esteemator would alert the wearer she was in danger of underestimating herself and thus jeopardizing her self esteem. It would gently remind her to turn inward and pay attention to the whispers of her soul, then nudge her into a self-care call-to-action. Should she fail to respond, it would shock her into shutdown mode and emit an alarm for a "friendtervention." If we cannot take care of ourselves, we would be of little value to anyone else.
